Ten on Tuesday
I love the holidays for these reasons:
1. My grandsons’ sense of wonderment – tho’ I worry that they’re entirely too acquisitive – they still have that child-like amazement about everything related to Christmas.
2. Single white candles in each window of a house – that’s my favorite lighting display.
3. White poinsettias on beds of pine boughs (with pinecones attached).
4. Snow – ok, not a frequent occurrence here, but still, when it happens, it’s magickal.
5. Our extended family gathering which never happens ON the 25th.
6. My favorite personal decorations: my ceramic tree with my Dad’s handcrafted red wooden sleigh with Rodney Reindeer sitting inside.
7. Windham Hill’s entire series of Winter Solstice CDs.
8. Making gifts that are totally not expected – one year it was sock monkeys for the boys, this year it’s something totally different from my normal craft pursuits.
9. Holiday concerts – orchestral, choral.
10. Christmas movies – at home, with popcorn and lots of knitting.
That’s it. My list of 10 Favorite Things about Christmas. What’s yours?

Nice list and you keep things in perspective.
My favorite thing is ignoring the Holiday and just doing our own thing. We'll make a nice dinner for ourselves and then maybe go to a movie. We might even light candles! ;-)
I love Advent, and the preparing. Did you know there are Somalian Christians who gather on each Christmas Eve with the honest expectation that Christ will return THIS YEAR? When it doesn't happen they say "Oh, well, it will certainly be next year." Oh, for such faith!
Very nice list! I think my favorite is on Christmas eve, sitting by the fire with a mug of glog (mulled wine) in hand, watching the girls open their annual present of pjs so they can get changed so we can read a bedtime story. And then on Christmas morning, waking up to have coffee and cardamom bread and open stockings together, just the four of us. That's what I wait for every year.
What a great list! I think I will make sure my kids see some of the classic Christmas movies.
Can you post a picture of your dad's sleigh? My dad is a wood carver and I so appreciate his work. They are treasures aren't they?
I'm feeling rushed this year, not enjoying the season. Thanks for helping me stop a moment and think about what I love about it.
If we have snow on Solstice, I'll go out after dark for a short cross-country ski (lighted trails here, joy!). And baking cookies, but especially watching dear ones enjoy those cookies. Blooming holiday cactus. How dark the night gets so early this time of year. Lots more... thanks again for reminding me!
