Nope...no right answer yet to the question of "What IS this thing, anyway?" so give it another shot! I'm a little further along, tho' I don't have a lot of time to spend knitting right now...What with the National Capital Cat Show coming up...
It's HOT here, tho' not as bad as some places, and the Blonde Bombshell loves to be out on the balcony baking her old joints. The Meezer, however, can only stand small doses in "the wilds..."

Oh, oh, I think I have it! The entrelac bag-to-be-felted. Glad you liked the socks, and that DD will be helping you with the cat show.
Poor Meezer...tell Meezer it could be worse, Ace had to visit the Vet yesterday! He's still angry with me.
My guess is: It's an entrelac bag.
